Can you tell our readers who Emily Wilkins is?

My name is Emily Wilkins. I am the founder and CEO of The Shades of Wellness, LLC, a platform for millennial women of color to connect and adopt healthier lifestyles. I am also a wife, a boy mom, and a serial entrepreneur. At Shades of Wellness, we are committed to providing health and wellness services that coach, educate, and empower millennial women of color to become the best version of themselves. We do this by offering health and wellness events, workshops, health coaching, fitness classes through our local partners, and webinars with healthcare and wellness professionals. We also offer a free exclusive network of knowledgeable healthcare professionals for women in need of a medical provider. Shades of Wellness was created to be a catalyst and safe space for women of color to gain the necessary resources to grow in their health and wellness journey.

How important is Women’s History to you and why?

Women’s History Month is important to me because it’s a celebration and reminder of all the courageous women who came before me who accomplished the unbelievable despite the odds presented against them. It’s a reminder that I can make a difference and change the world if I remain persistent.

How did the idea for Shades of Wellness come about?

Shades of Wellness started on three main factors racism, the scarcity of sisterhood in the health and wellness community, and resources provided for millennial women of color. We wanted to fight against racism towards women of color, bring women together to fellowship, and teach women how to live a healthier lifestyle to increase longevity.

What is the meaning behind the name?

The name of Shades of Wellness is a stance that all shades of black and brown women deserve to experience total health and wellness. Society loves to focus on one specific color as a standard for health and wellness which is wrong.

What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?

My son, David. The birth of Shades of Wellness started in 2017 when God revealed my purpose however it wasn’t until I became pregnant with my son that drove me to pursue my purpose without a doubt. I wanted to teach my son that when God calls you to fulfill a calling, listen and trust him. I wanted to also teach my son that God Doesn’t Call the Qualified, He Qualifies the Called.

Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur?

Yes, prayers, a plan, and consistency. Pray because the enemy will try to stop you from purposing your God-given purpose. A plan because you will need a map to help guide you along the way even if you need to revise it a few times, a plan is a must. Consistency will allow you to see what requires revision in your plan. It will also allow you to establish your reputation and allows you to create your audience.

What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

My favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur is learning, meeting new people, and how it’s made me a better person. For example, I hate public speaking however Shades of Wellness has pushed me to improve my public speaking presence. There’s no room for fear when becoming an entrepreneur.

What motivates you?

My son, David III, my family, and knowing that I was placed on this earth to make an impact even if it’s a small impact.

What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage it?

My greatest fear is failing and leaving this earth without completing what God has trusted me to do. Honestly, I tell myself that failure is a part of success. To win you will need to know what failure looks like. Failure is a step closer to being successful. As far as my fear of leaving this earth not completing what God has trusted me to do, I pray against it. I continue to ask God to guide me and allow me to listen twice as much as I love to speak.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

Starting my business and watching it all unfold. Everything that I imagine is happening right before my eyes, it’s amazing. God is forever faithful. I’ve helped so many women and made so many impactful connections. I’m grateful for it all and it’s just the beginning of it all.
