Can you tell our readers who Allena Grant is?

Allena Grant is a woman who is redefining who she is through the lenses of her business. If I am being honest, I felt like the year before 2020 I had lost myself and I was just going through the motions of life. 2020 was the year of the reset for me and I found that confidence that I had when I was a little girl before the world influenced how I saw myself. Starting my business helped bring out the greatness in myself and I started to view myself how my close loved ones saw me, which is a beautiful, smart and capable woman.  I am a young woman trying to impact the world through Moods Eyewear. I hope that women feel good about themselves when they wear my eyewear.

How important is Women’s History to you and why?

Women’s History is important to me because I feel that it is imperative for the next generation of women to understand how far women have come and all the accomplishments women have achieved. I feel that understanding women’s history can give young women the confidence to keep pushing through life. Learning about the women in my family has personally motivated me. Many of the women in my family are professors, accountants, scientists, medical professionals, lawyers, teachers, and officers. I have watched them succeed in their professional life and then come home to their husbands and children. So anytime I am feeling down or not motivated I think of the women in my family and think to myself that I have the same blood as them. I am reminded that I can get through with whatever I am dealing with and that I can have it all!

How did the idea for Moods come about?

The idea for Moods Eyewear came about during the pandemic when I was laid off of my job. I really had the time to dig deep and started to research successful people. I noticed a trend in what they were saying and it started with finding your passion. So I searched for my passion and my purpose in life. Little did I know my passion and business had been sitting right between my eyes for years. I realized I had a passion for shades and glasses. I loved going to the optical store and picking a new pair of frames out since I was a little girl. There was no limit to how much I would spend when it came to a pair of frames I had to have. I always received compliments on the frames I chose to wear. So one day it occurred to me that I should start my own luxury brand of eyewear…So I did!

What is the meaning behind the name?

I came up with the name Moods Eyewear because I wanted to provide a frame that fits a woman’s every Mood. When you’re at work you may have a serious mood and you may want eyewear that is safe and that is a neutral color. When you are at brunch with your girls you may want to wear a daring color or frame. The concept of the Moods Eyewear is to cater to every woman’s mood. I have been wearing glasses since I was 10 and as I grew older I started to pick frames that were very daring and I started to question when picking frames would this affect me professionally? So when picking the shade of acetate for Moods Eyewear…I chose two safe neutral shades of acetate and two shades of acetate that allows one to express themselves in a creative way. Depending on the consumer’s mood they could choose which color fit their personality at the time.

What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?

The key driving force to becoming an entrepreneur was when I realized I should be contributing more to society and getting more out of life. I realized that I wasn’t currently happy with my job at the time and I really dug deep to find my purpose. I eventually was laid off from my job during the pandemic and I was able to use that time off to launch my business and focus on myself. Now I recognize that this was a blessing in disguise.  All the years that I put into that company I should have been putting into myself so that I could have something to lean on if I ever came across hard times. Also, I have always watched my mom start many businesses so becoming an entrepreneur wasn’t foreign to me

Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur?

Honestly in my opinion the key to entrepreneurship is dedication, believing in your product and never giving up on your business. For me it was important that I got into a business that aligned with my passion because it makes it easier to give something your all when you love what you’re doing. I believe in order to be successful as an entrepreneur you have to believe in yourself and product when no one else does and know that you are capable of whatever God places on your plate. Finally, I believe that one has to remain consistent and keep pushing through even when your business is going through a dry spell. Everytime I personally feel down or I start to question myself, I get an order, someone compliments me on my eyewear, or someone reaches out to me wanting to collaborate with my business. So remaining patient and knowing that your season is coming is very important to keep in mind.

What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

My favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur is seeing the eyewear that I designed and gave my all to on someone’s face.  I just feel so overwhelmed with emotion when I learn that other people love my eyewear just as much as I do. Especially when you look back at your life and realize all of the hard times that led up to this point and all that energy of feeling rejected was put into the design of my frames to prove to myself that I am capable of being an eyewear designer and entrepreneur. It makes me feel so accomplished.

What motivates you?

Leaving my mark on this world motivates me. Making my parents proud motivates me. I feel my parents deserve to see me and my business reach heights that I could never have imagined for myself because they have sacrificed and put so much energy into me.

What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage it?

I choose not to give my fears energy and I do not feed into it because that creates anxiety which is not healthy. I have rewired my brain to not be afraid to fail. Because from my failures I have learned so much and it honestly made me wiser. I believe that what God has for me nobody can take away.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

The most satisfying moment in business for me is when I am running errands and someone compliments me on my frames and I hand them my card and tell them I designed these frames and Moods Eyewear is my business. I love to watch people reactions and see how shocked they become because they are in disbelief that I designed my eyewear. That has been the most satisfying moment of me launching my business.
